What does the database offer?
The Debrecen 1870 Geographic Information Database (DTTTA1870) was created for scientific research purposes, to provide information on the 1870 census of Debrecen in 1870 and a contemporary map (more information: Sources). GIStory, data from the complete database is made available in various formats, which are not of interest not only to academic researchers. In 1870, the city of Debrecen, two decades after the then two decades after the change of regime, the revolution of 1848-49 and the struggle for freedom, Debrecen was in the throes of civilisation and industrial modernisation.
In what stage of development/underdevelopment did Debrecen enter the process of industrial modernisation, how did it react to the economic development and urbanisation? What has it left behind and what has it progressed in, is there a "Debreceness" to be discovered, a specific urban development path for Debrecen?
Our geo-spatial database offers a detailed and diverse insight into the city's context for those who are interested in the questions, but also offers plenty to discover for those who are interested in historical adventures. You can click through the contemporary digital and raster maps of the city of Tuscany to find the location of the land on each plot. and the names of the occupants, their relationships, denominations and occupations. But you can also use the search panel to find answers to more comprehensive questions, such as where you are in the widows, students, people in various professions, or even native residents and those who have moved in to the city.
And if these searches do not provide sufficient answers to the queries, you can check the "density", i.e. which of the surveyed categories (building, population) occurred with greater intensity/density in the city area of the city. And from each point, you can return again and again to the individual plot-housing/household-people level data to retrieve.
Step into the streets of 1870s Debrecen's inner city, open the gates of the plots, knock on the doors of the dwellings and get to know the town of the period in person!
